No, you will not need to speak any French to thoroughly enjoy Montreal. Literally everyone in the tourism and hospitality industry, including virtually all hotel and restaurant personnel, cab drivers and retail store clerks and waiters and waitresses do speak good English. A fear of not being understood should never be a factor in deciding whether to visit Montreal or not.

However, if you took French in high school or college, you’ll undoubtedly have lots of fun using it again, because most residents of Montreal are native francophones.

The Queen Elizabeth.
This venerable, 1000-room Fairmont property is the grande dame of Montréal hotels. It’s located at the very epicenter of the City, above the train station (VIA Rail and AMTRAK), connected to Place Ville Marie, in Montréal’s expansive Underground City, with its thousands of boutiques, restaurants and cafés. The hotel’s location is the best in the city, and the hotel has all the creature comforts, including pool and state-of-the-art health club. This is our preferred hotel for business and leisure visitors.

The Marriott Château Champlain.
This landmark hotel is affectionately known to Montréalers as the “cheese grater” for reasons you’ll understand on arrival. The architecturally unique, high-rise property overlooks Dominion Square and Mount Royal, and the views through the floor to ceiling windows from the north side of the hotel are stunning, especially in the autumn, or during an evening snowfall (ask for a north-facing room on an upper floor). The hotel is connected by elevator to a Metro station in its lower level, and to the legendary Montréal Underground with everything it has to offer.

Primarily a business traveler’s hotel, one unique feature that your kids will be talking about for years is the outdoor, rooftop swimming pool that’s accessible from inside the hotel by ducking under a window that extends below the water’s surface.
