VISIT CANADA planned its first educational field trip to Montréal for a group of French teachers from the Boston area in the fall of 1985. What we didn’t know then about students and teachers on educational tours, we made up for with hard work, attention to detail, a passion for quality and a thorough knowledge of the destination.
We added student trips to Québec City later that year, and over the next several years, we became very, very good at what we did … operating short, affordable trips by chartered motorcoach for students and teachers of French who lacked the time or the resources to travel to Europe.
In the early 1990s, a number of our clients (teachers of French who also taught Spanish) were asking us if we could do something similar for their Spanish classes. New York City and Chicago quickly came to mind, but we resisted this at first, attributing our early success to our specialized knowledge of Montréal and Québec City. However, we acquiesced as a favor to a client and a friend, and began operating our domestic Spanish trips in 1995. In doing so, we came to realize that what allowed us to make this transition so easily was the knowledge we had developed about the needs, interests of foreign language teachers, and biorhythms of middle- and high school students, and their care and feeding on overnight field trips.
Today, having taken approximately 100,000 students on affordable, pedagogically significant field trips to New York City, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC and historic Portsmouth, in addition to Montréal, Québec City, Ottawa and Toronto, we have absorbed things about the needs of students and teachers of foreign languages that the amateurs in this business haven’t even wondered about.
And, given what we have learned in 25 years about the rhythm and pace of class trips for students from the sixth through the twelfth grades, and about the museums, institutions and topography these destinations in general, we are also easily able to plan general educational trips that make the most of every minute spent at these destinations. In short, planning a three- or four-day class or school trip to New York City, Boston or Chicago, when we know the ropes as well as we do, often becomes a matter of knowing what not to include.
We sincerely believe that the quality and content of our meticulously crafted, foreign-language-based and general educational tour itineraries are second to none, and light years ahead of many, and we look forward to demonstrating this to you.
