More Benefits of Student Travel
We have already discussed how travel makes language
learning "real", allows students to make cultural discoveries
on their own, and is highly motivating. There are other benefits as well:
Educational Travel Implements the National
Standards:
Student travel implements the 5 C's of the National
Standards for World Language Learning:
Communication: Communicate in languages other
than English
Cultures: Gain knowledge and understanding
of other cultures
Connections: Connect with other disciplines
and acquire new information
Comparisons: Develop insight into the nature
of language and culture
Communities: Participate in multilingual communities
at home and around the world
Travel May Have a Positive Impact on French
Enrollments:
Students returning from a positive
travel experience will share it with family and friends. The Montréal
Trip can become a "drawing card" for students to enroll in the
French program. Students who have felt successful trying out language
skills in Canada may stay in the French program longer and perhaps enroll
in more trips.
There are Personal Benefits for the Teacher:
It is very rewarding to watch young people make
cultural discoveries and use language skills during a trip. Teachers can
enjoy a more relaxed relationship with students outside the classroom.
Post-trip activities such as sharing Montréal photos, scrapbooks, evaluations
and creating a multimedia presentation about the trip, enhance the sense
of closeness which develops during travel. When students recall the highlights
of this school year, the Montréal trip will be at the top of the list!
