No, you will not need to speak any French to thoroughly enjoy Quebec City. Literally everyone in the tourism and hospitality industry, including virtually all hotel and restaurant personnel, cab drivers and retail store clerks and waiters and waitresses do speak good English. A fear of not being understood should never be a factor in deciding whether to visit Québec or not.

However, if you took French in high school or college, you’ll undoubtedly have lots of fun using it again, because most residents of Québec are native francophones.

Le Chateau Frontenac.
It doesn’t take a travel writer to know that the century-old Chateau Frontenac is Québec City’s (if not Eastern Canada’s) pre-eminent hotel. It is truly deluxe, an architectural landmark, and it’s located at the epicenter of everything you’ll want to see and do in Québec City. For many regular visitors, it’s as much a pilgrimage to the Chateau Frontenac as it is a trip to Québec.

Auberge Saint-Antoine.
If the Chateau Frontenac has a single rival for style and luxury, it is the elegant, newly expanded Auberge Saint-Antoine (that will triple in size to 100 rooms in the summer of 2003). It is a combination of heritage buildings and new construction, and as you arrive at the hotel you may not be able to tell where the history ends and the new construction begins, although you’ll have no trouble recognizing the centuries-old ruins that are integrated into the structure. The hotel is located at the edge of the Quartier Petit Champlain, across the street from the Musée de la Civilisation. The hotel is absolutely everything it claims to be.

Hotel Chateau Bellevue.
The smallish, but picturesque Hotel Chateau Bellevue, is located across from a lovely quiet park opposite the Chateau Frontenac, and offers wonderful views of the Chateau and the Saint Lawrence River. The hotel has undergone a series of room modernizations in recent years, and has many faithful customers who return year after year.

Hotel Clarendon
If you can’t get into the Chateau Frontenac, but want to stay in the heart of the Old City, the Hotel Clarendon is a stone’s throw from the Chateau, across from City Hall, just a few steps from Québec City’s colorful Latin Quarter. Some of the rooms in the original section of the hotel are small, so you’ll want a room in the new section of the hotel.

^check rates and availability

Manoir Victoria
The modern hotel Manoir Victoria is a very reasonable choice, at the edge of the Quartier Latin, a short walk to everything.

Loews Le Concorde
The deluxe Loews Le Concorde is the western anchor of the Grande Allée, which, with it’s dozens of sidewalk cafes and restaurants, is thought of as the Champs Elysées of Québec. The hotel is distinguished, among other things, by its revolving rooftop restaurant, offering panoramic views of the Plains of Abraham, the Saint Lawrence River, the Old City and the Laurentian Mountains. Many of it’s large, comfortable rooms offer the same.

^check rates and availability

Manoir Lafayette
The Manoir Lafayette is a small hotel, nestled directly in the center of the Grande Allée, between the Loews Le Concord and the Chateau Laurier. It’s also nice choice, especially in the summer.

Québec Hilton
The modern, high-rise Québec Hilton is located across the street from Québec’s picturesque Assemblée Nationale (provincial parliament building), adjacent (and connected to) the Québec City Convention Centre, and a short walk from Place d’Youville and the Latin Quarter. If you’re attending a convention, this is one of your two best options, but a nice choice for any visitor.

^check rates and availability

Delta Québec
The modern Delta Québec is the other hotel of choice for convention-goers. It is also connected to the Convention Centre, obliquely across the street from the Assemblée Nationale, and an easy walk to Place d’Youville and the Saint-Jean Gate.
